Blue is the new White!

Had an amazing opportunity to discuss some important issues within the trade world, as well as having a great time! 👍👍 Check it out!

Becoming successful in today’s America is simple: graduate high school, go to college, and get a white-collar job. That path is undoubtedly going to lead you to the biggest paycheck and the best opportunities. Right?

The truth is, some of the most lucrative jobs out there are blue-collar jobs–yet society pushes the perception that being an auto mechanic, plumber, electrician, or construction worker somehow indicates a lack of success. A career in the skilled trades was once well-regarded as a good, honest profession. Now, we discourage young people from pursuing those careers in favor of racking up massive student loan debt and pursuing professional careers that may not always play to their strengths.

In Blue Is The New White, Josh Zolin shows that success doesn’t have to mean a college degree. He discovered this firsthand, rising through hard work from a technician at his dad’s small business to the CEO of a multi-million-dollar company. There is more than one path to a stable career and a great financial future; in this book, you’ll learn just how many opportunities await you in places you never thought to look.

Boiler maintenance in Calgary. Laars boiler and Watts PRV

BOILER MAINTENANCE IS KEY!

Replacing this PRV got a little complicated!

Client sent in a video of a pump screaming. Arrived to find the PRV plugged and inoperable. It’s the small things that can cause big problems.

In Calgary and own Commercial property, give us an opportunity to look after your equipment, you won’t be disappointed! If We Can’t Do It, It Can’t Be Done!

One of the biggest thieves of efficiency in boiler operations is the accumulation of soot and/or scale on heat exchanger surfaces. It does not take long for soot to start causing significant loss of energy efficiency.

In a matter of just a couple of weeks, there could be a potential of 1/8 in. of soot on equipment stemming from regular usage, which means lost efficiency and overspending in utility costs.
Scale can also accumulate quickly and add unnecessary operational expenses.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, fuel consumption could increase as much as five per cent in firetube boilers as a result of scale.

Routine maintenance and cleaning is the most beneficial way to keep boilers healthy and running efficiently. Performing this maintenance at least once a year is an investment that will pay off.

TIPS FOR A HEALTHY BOILER

  • Stick to an Inspection and Maintenance Schedule – At least once a year qualified on-site personnel or a third party should inspect and clean all parts of the boiler. Contractors may create a maintenance plan to be done internally or do the work themselves. It is important to have a solid schedule in place to keep clients on track.
  • Review the Chemical and/or Mechanical Cleaning Solutions – You will notice a significant reduction in operating costs by removing the contaminants on both the waterside (scale formation) and the fireside (soot and scale formation) of boilers. While mechanical cleaning typically utilizes moving brushes to remove scale from the walls of tubes and pipes, the chemical process uses a chemical solution to flow through the tubes dissolving and flushing out the scale.
  • Maintain Daily Logs – Most problems develop slowly, therefore a log is the best way to detect significant changes. Have the facility manager keep daily logs on the following: type and amount of fuel used; flue gas temperature; makeup water volume; and steam pressure, temperature, and volume. Ongoing logs will help monitor for any potential issues that might develop or identify problems that could be fixed with proper cleaning.
  • Perform Visual Inspections – Look at the boiler tubes and conducting a visual inspection to check for scale accumulation on a more frequent basis to help ensure the boiler tubes are free of scale and buildup.

Drain Cleaning 101

drain cleaner is a chemical product that unblocks sewer pipes or clogged wastewater drains. The term may also refer to a mechanical device such as a plumber’s snake, drain auger, toilet plunger, or similar device. Occasionally, the term is applied to a plumber or other individual who performs the drain cleaning and hygiene.

Handheld drain augers are typically designed to clean portions of a drain within 8 metres (25 ft) of the drain opening. The cable of a handheld drain auger is driven into a drain by the mechanical force created when the operator rotates a drum that anchors the cable.

Many handheld augers have cables that are thin enough to pass through common sink traps, though some manufacturers do not recommend using handheld drain augers in toilets because of their potential to scratch ceramic surfaces. Instead, a special closet auger (from “water closet“) should be used.[citation needed]

Similar to handheld augers, drain rods can be used for clearing blockages in long, straight pipes.

Advantages of handheld drain augers include low relative cost and ready availability through hardware stores. However, drawbacks include a reach that is normally limited to 8 metres (25 ft), and the potential for the twisting cable to scratch the ceramic surfaces of plumbing fixtures. They are also only effective on small-diameter pipes – 40–50 mm rather than main sewer pipes of 110 mm.

Safety considerations include a requirement to wear protective gloves and eye protection, and to practice good hygiene after coming into contact with drain fluids.

Air burst drain cleaners

Air burst drain cleaners use accelerated carbon dioxide, air or other gas to rupture the clog membrane. Accelerated gas creates a force on standing water that can dislodge clogs that accumulate close to drain openings.

Advantages of air burst drain cleaners include the potential to immediately clear clogs and slow-running drains, in contrast to chemical cleaners that can take more time to work. Air burst cleaners can dislodge obstructions that are further away from drain openings than can a plunger, and in contrast to drain augers do not risk scratching the ceramic surfaces of sinks, bathtubs and toilets.

Disadvantages of air burst drain cleaners include a limited cleaning range in pipes that do not contain standing water and, in general, ineffectiveness for unclogging blocked main sewer drains.

Safety considerations for air burst drain cleaners include a requirement to wear eye protection and, when using an air burst cleaner that uses compressed gas cartridges, careful handling of unused cartridges.
