What Are My Options for Heating my Garage or Barn?

There are several options for heating your outdoor buildings.  The most popular are the unit heater [fan coil] or infrared heaters.

The unit heaters are generally the less expensive choice and can provide adequate heat for large spaces, their downside is that they tend to move a great deal of hot air around, not necessarily the best when dealing with dust or other materials that may be affected by moving air.  They can also be noisy as the unit operates.

The infrared heater is a great second option and it provides an effective solution for heating.  Working very much like the sun, it sends out waves of heat that are absorbed by the objects that the waves come in contact with.  They are very popular in hockey arenas and other commercial spaces.  It’s only downside is that the unit must be installed carefully with distance factors considered to prevent any damage to cars or other surfaces that might be subject to overheating.

What can I do to extend the life of my septic field?

Most septic fields should last 25 years if properly \ installed and maintained.  The best way to ensure a long lasting field is to think of it as a living thing.  Your septic tank loves the following environment:  Warm, dark, moist and lots of nutrients.  That means that you should keep harsh chemicals, large amounts of cold water, non-biodegradable products and materials not easily broken down from entering our septic tanks.

As for the field itself, keep large vehicles or animals off.  Keep the grass maintained to a height of no more that 3 inches to ensure that water is allowed to come to rest on the field.  Tanks should be emptied every 3 to 5 years at the most. These tips will help to extend the life of you tank and field.

If you have questions or concerns regarding your field, we have the expertise to resolve any issue you may encounter. Contact us at

DO I NEED A WATER SOFTENER?

Water hardness is caused by calcium and magnesium in the ground and surface water. If either of these minerals is present in your drinking water in high concentrations the water is considered hard.

The hardness of Calgary water can be very seasonal and can vary by location.  The northside of the city receive water from the Bow river [Bearspaw water treatment plant].  The southside from the Elbow river thru the Glenmore water treatment plant.  Hardness  is expressed as Calcium Carbonate CaCo3 in milligrams per litre.  Hardness becomes an issue when the rating falls between 150 to 300 or greater. Calgarys rate falls between 180 -210 or greater which classifies our water as hard.

Hard water can reduce the effectiveness of detergent and can cause a mineral buildup  on the mechanical parts of dishwashers and washing machines.  Glasses and utensils can carry a buildup, as can clothes that are washed in hard water. The lack of effectiveness of your shower head can be the result of hard water buildup.

The experts at Baker Plumbing can advise you as to the quality or hardness of your water, make suggestions in regards to water softeners and provide a quote to supply, install and maintain a softener.

DRAINAGE PROBLEMS

Are your bathroom fixtures draining slowly or slower all the time?  Are your toilets flushing properly? It can sometimes be difficult to determine what is exactly causing the problem or where the blockage is occurring.

If you have experienced no relief after trying various methods and DO NOT want your pipes dug up unnecessarily, a camera inspection is the answer.

Using a camera to go down inside the drain pipe can show you exactly what the problem is and where it is located. The camera can also provide an interior inspection of the drainage pipe to look for cracks or breakage. Being able to see what the problem is and where it is can save alot of unnecessary expense and time.  A visual report eliminates quess work on the part of your contractor and enables them to provide you with an accurate quote.

Baker Plumbing has all the necessary equipment and expertise to solve your problem.  Call us at 403-279-7554 and contact us at info@bakerplumbing.ca

FOUR COMMON CAUSES OF BLOCKED DRAINS

When the drain from the house to the septic or sewer becomes blocked the cause is usually one or more of these four things.

  1. Accidental Damage: Damage of drain pipes in the ground can be the result of a couple of things.  It might have occurred during the backfilling of the home.  What might have been a hairline crack that can develop in a leak overtime.  Damage can occur when digging to install a fence post or a tree and being unaware of where the pipes are.
  2. Tree Roots: A common cause of blocked drains. Tree roots can manage to push their way into pipe through the smallest of crevices.  Roots can continue to grow, creating an obstacle or collecting points for fats and solids
  3. Grease and fats: One of the most common causes of blocked drains can come from the kitchen. Grease and fats have a tendency to build up along the walls of the pipes narrowing the way.  Even if the buildup is washed away through internal piping with hot water they can still contribute into creating a blockage if there are roots and other objects in the underground drainage system
  4. Undissolvable Items: This is probably the most preventable of all blockage issues. These are caused by items being intentionally or unintentionally being flushed down toilets and they will not dissolve.  They can range from toys to feminine hygiene products and disposable diapers.

The best ways to deal with these issues is to have a professional service and repair your pipes. Call our experts at Baker Plumbing, 403-279-7554 or contact us through info@bakerplumbing.ca

FATHER’S DAY IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!

Bring that gas BBQ out of hibernation.  Check it out for cracked pipes or fittings, clean it up and get started. Summer is short in Calgary and we want to make the best of it.  Everyone loves a great steak or a juicy burger, especially Dad.

If you have purchased  a new BBQ, need it hooked up or require a gas line install, please note that you require a gas permit from the City and a licensed gas fitter.  Baker Plumbing’s gas fitters can make short work of supplying natural gas to your BBQ, ensuring your home and family’s safety and years of enjoyment.

Cost of a gas line depends upon the complexity and length.  It also depends upon whether or not your existing line, if you have one, needs to be upgraded to a larger size. If you require a quote, we will happily supply one.
